Carolina Motter Catarino, PhD, is an expert in bioengineering and toxicology, currently serving as the Preclinical Center Coordinator at Grupo Boticário in Brazil. She earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Analysis from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of São Paulo (USP), where her research focused on the biology of the skin. She subsequently earned her PhD in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, pioneering the use of 3D bioprinting to construct physiologically relevant human skin models.
Dr. Catarino’s research includes the successful incorporation of hair follicles into 3D bioprinted skin models, a critical advancement for regenerative therapies and studying the hair cycle. Her clinical research interests comprise alternative in vitro methodologies, advanced computational modeling, and Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA). She leads a multidisciplinary team driving the development and implementation of new methodologies for studying the hair cycle and evaluating cosmetic active ingredients.
She has authored several scientific publications in prestigious journals, including Science Advances, Trends in Biotechnology, and Tissue Engineering. Dr. Catarino is an active member of the International Cooperation on Cosmetics Regulation (ICCR) Joint Working Group on “Integrated Strategies for Safety Assessment of Cosmetic Ingredients.” An award-winning researcher, she is a recipient of the Lush Prize for Young Researchers in the Americas for her work on animal-free approaches.
Dr. Motter Catarino will speak on, “Bridging Data and Tissue: Bioinformatics and 3D Bioengineering for Next-Generation Hair Follicle Research.”
